In seconds, we can load an app and stake money on poker, roulette, or blackjack &#8211; or bet on football games, horse races, presidential elections, and even the Oscars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As convenient as it is, the ability to wager on almost anything at your fingertips can be disastrous for the estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.addictionhelp.com\/gambling\/statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who meet the criteria for compulsive gamblers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about kids?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, a child would have had to illegally enter an 18+ casino or betting shop to gamble. Yet, youth gambling has recently been described as a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/oct\/03\/a-massive-public-health-problem-australian-children-as-young-as-10-are-hooked-on-gambling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive public health problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d with children as young as 10 showing signs of addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the country or state, the law requires people to be over 18 or 21 to gamble online. <\/span><b>Although most online gambling platforms state that they have age restrictions, they often aren\u2019t enforced strongly, if at all.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, a minor could bypass an age verification process by using information from an older sibling or parent.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to spend long online to see how young people are being drawn into the flashy yet hollow world of gambling through a range of questionable tactics, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Targeted social media ads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Platforms like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/tiktok-quick-guide-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-use-instagram-supervision\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are guilty of bombarding underage users with gambling ads, often with cartoonish graphics and trendy slang to make betting seem fun and harmless.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Influencer and streamer promotions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Content creators on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/twitch-kids-app-safety-guide-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, YouTube, and TikTok normalize gambling by promoting platforms or even streaming their bets, turning high-risk wagers into entertainment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Free-to-play gambling apps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Games featuring poker, slots, and blackjack may seem harmless at first, but they frequently push players to purchase in-app currency, blurring the lines between gaming and real gambling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sports betting <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Major events like the Super Bowl are flooded with ads for betting platforms, conditioning young fans to associate sports with gambling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>\u201cRisk-free\u201d betting offers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Promos like \u201cfree bets\u201d and \u201cbonus cash\u201d make gambling seem like an easy, no-strings-attached activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Loot boxes and gacha games: Gambling gateways?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gambling platforms and their murky marketing strategies aside, there\u2019s a more insidious way that young people are being unknowingly conditioned to gamble &#8211;\u00a0 <\/span><b>through video games.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-are-loot-boxes-how-harmful-are-they-to-kids\/\"><b>Loot boxes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are virtual items in video games that players can purchase or earn through gameplay, offering randomized rewards like character skins, weapons, or other in-game bonuses. The excitement of not knowing what you\u2019ll get until you open the box, and the prospect of scoring a rare and valuable item, has led to criticism that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.hbs.edu\/working-knowledge\/the-15-billion-question-have-loot-boxes-turned-video-gaming-into-gambling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video games are increasingly resembling gambling platforms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Loot box mechanics can be found in many \u201cfree-to-play\u201d mobile games including Clash Royale, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/brawl-stars-video-game-guide-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brawl Stars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Call of Duty: Mobile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-are-gacha-games\/\"><b>Gacha games<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are video games that encourage players to win virtual items like cards and characters through a mechanism, similar to a vending machine, in which players pull, spin, or roll using in-game currency.
