We know this offers some great benefits, but it also carries a significant list of negative consequences for developing brains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the crucial preschool developmental period, it\u2019s important that parents set firm screen time boundaries to protect their children\u2019s physical, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand that this can be hard to do, especially when it feels much simpler to allow young children screen time to keep them occupied. In this article, we\u2019ll explore why screen time boundaries are vital for preschoolers, provide strategies for boundary-setting, and offer practical tips on having age-appropriate conversations with your child about screen time limits. <\/span><br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why screen time boundaries are important for 3 to 5-year-olds<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children at this age are in a critical stage of development. Your child\u2019s unhappiness, frustration, and upset about screen time limits are completely normal, and are not a sign that you should give them more time. Acknowledging and empathizing with their feelings, while firmly sticking to the boundary you set is key.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might say things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I know you love watching that show and you\u2019re mad that I am turning it off. It\u2019s OK to feel mad. You can watch another episode tomorrow after lunch.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou want to play games on my phone and you\u2019re sad that I said no. I understand that you\u2019re feeling sad about it, and my job is to keep you healthy. Would you like to go on the swings or read a book?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things you can do to support your preschooler\u2019s development is set and maintain firm screen time limits. It\u2019s essential for their physical, emotional, and cognitive development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children who learn how to manage their device use in healthy ways from a young age are better able to do it as they get older. The goal isn\u2019t to eliminate screen time altogether, but to balance it with other important activities, such as physical play, creativity, and real-world social interactions.
