As gaming has evolved, it is safe to say it has also become more violent, addictive, and lucrative. In terms of money, I am not talking about the prize money you see on the news, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/16-year-old-kyle-giersdorf-wins-3-million-in-fortnite-world-cup-2019-7?IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16-year-old Kyle Giersdorf taking home $3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after winning the Fortnite World Cup Final. I am talking about the gaming industry itself which reached over $184 billion USD in revenue in 2022, and which has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lpesports.com\/e-sports-news\/the-video-games-industry-is-bigger-than-hollywood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bigger than Hollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for well over a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>The rise in violent video games<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a psychologist, it\u2019s the upward trend in violence that most interests and concerns me, and the parents that I meet. As video games become more advanced and more realistic, so too does the violence. The verdict is still out. Many studies, including those supported by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/about\/policy\/violent-video-games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, find violence in gaming leads to increases in aggression, but others <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/intl\/blog\/evidence-based-living\/201807\/do-violent-video-games-make-kids-more-violent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify no such link<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At first glance, <\/span><b>it seems logical that more exposure to violence would lead to more violent behavior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, given the massive exposure to violent games kids have, wouldn\u2019t kids today, after years of violent game play, be far more violent? Yet, they are not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I agree with the results of a study in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/do-violent-video-games-trigger-aggression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that says exposure to video game violence leads to a small increase in aggressive behavior. And, that <\/span><b>only when combined with other negative life factors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like violence or guns in the home, does video game violence become a contributing factor to turning to violence in the real world. It reflects what I have seen in my own practice and doesn\u2019t use video games as a scapegoat for all of society\u2019s ills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What can parents do about violence in video games?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t believe in banning video games or blaming them for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/05\/sports\/trump-violent-video-games-studies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass shootings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I do think <\/span><b>even a small increase in negative behavior or creating a casualness with guns is enough reason to at least limit violent game play<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Violent games, like nearly all games today, are also designed to be addictive, and here is where the evidence is increasingly clear \u2013 extended exposure to excessive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/the-scary-lasting-effects-of-too-much-screen-time-on-children-2019-04-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screen time is harmful to children\u2019s psychological, emotional, and physical health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, no, <\/span><b>your child is probably not going to be permanently harmed by playing violent video games once in a while <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I recommend keeping screen exposure, of any kind, to a maximum of 1 hour a day). But it\u2019s probably not doing them all that good either. In fact, <\/span><b>I hear kids complaining of the peer pressure to play, fear of being left out, and humiliation for making mistakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or not having the latest gear. There are just so many other ways they could be spending their time, including just being bored!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember, <\/span><b>endorsing extended exposure to violence is also a reflection of your values as a parent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
