What we found for social media apps<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If TikTok rose in popularity across 2019 and 2020, through dance routines that kept us entertained during lockdown, and endless duets of <\/span>sea shanties<\/span><\/a>, then 2021 was the year it soared. Climbing to <\/span>1 billion monthly users worldwide<\/span><\/a> by September, it secured itself as the third most popular social media platform worldwide, beaten only by the new \u201cmetaverse\u201d of Facebook and Instagram. <\/span>For children, however, TikTok was champion<\/b>: it topped the global charts in our research in terms of both popularity and time spent on the app, with TikTok alone experiencing <\/span>a<\/b> 139%<\/b> increase in screen time from 2019<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of all the app categories we examined, social media experienced the second highest growth, with <\/span>time spent on social media apps increasing <\/b>by 11%<\/b> in 2021<\/b>. Due to the notification-fuelled nature of social media, it also proved to be one of the most difficult categories for children to switch off from. Across the day, <\/span>over 50% of the time they devoted to social media was spent during school hours<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

THE MOST POPULAR SOCIAL MEDIA APPS IN 2021<\/h3>\n

TikTok reigned supreme<\/b> as children\u2019s most popular social media platform<\/b> in all the countries we explored in our report: <\/span>41% <\/b>of kids used the app globally, while country-by-country, Spanish children were the biggest fans of TikTok, at <\/span>57%<\/b>, followed by the UK at<\/span> 48%<\/b>, and finally the US, at <\/span>40%<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s global second place,<\/span> Facebook<\/b>, held its position for another year in 2021, with just a slight dip in popularity, from 39% to <\/span>37%<\/b>. <\/span>Snapchat<\/b>, on the other hand, rose in popularity across 2021, claiming the bronze medal with <\/span>33%<\/b> of kids using the platform. Largely, the social media giants of the Metaverse – Instagram and Facebook – along with TikTok, Snapchat, and Pinterest, dominated the top 5 in every country, with only subtle changes in popularity. <\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n
