They can connect with each other more easily than ever before through social media, texting, online forums, and more. While this increased digital connection can certainly bring benefits, it can also bring an increased potential for social problems \u2013 including<\/span><b> bullying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberbullying has become a widespread problem for kids; in 2019,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/coe\/indicator\/a10\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research showed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that about 16% of children in grades 9-12 experienced some form of cyberbullying online. As cyberbullying continues to increase, it\u2019s important that we as parents learn to identify signs that our kids are getting involved. So what if you suspect it\u2019s your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">child who is a cyberbully<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Here\u2019s <\/span><b>how you as a parent can identify and prevent cyberbullying in your own home<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>What is cyberbullying?<\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopbullying.gov\/cyberbullying\/what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberbullying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a form of bullying which takes place over the internet, including social media, instant messaging, online games, and more. It involves <\/span><b>sending, sharing, or posting negative or harmful content about others<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cyberbullying can also include sharing personal or private information with others with malicious intent. Cyberbullying can be directly aimed at a specific person, or cyberbullies may engage in these types of activities at the expense of many.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cyberbullying often occurs between people who have connections in the real world, social media and other platforms have allowed cyberbullies to target complete strangers while maintaining anonymity. <\/span><b>This has made cyberbullying an even larger problem than ever before<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now anyone can engage in cyberbullying or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qustodio.com\/en\/2021\/10\/19\/difference-online-trolls-and-cyberbullies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online trolling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with little risk to themselves, while remaining anonymous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberbullying can occur in a variety of places, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online forums<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online games<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media (Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instant messaging apps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Why do students cyberbully?<\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There can be a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfamily.com\/reasons-why-kids-cyberbully-others-460553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variety of reasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that kids engage in cyberbullying, depending on individual circumstances. Here are a few of the most common<\/span><b> reasons why students engage in cyberbullying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Lack of social skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many cyberbullies resort to retaliatory activities when they find<\/span><b> trouble making lasting connections at school<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students who have a hard time making good friends are more likely to mistreat others online, and may begin cyberbullying those who they feel have mistreated them in real life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. This leads to cyberbullies feeling as though they could never experience any consequences for their actions, and often encourages them to engage in more severe bullying activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Lack of supervision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some families, parents have little time to watch over everything their kids do on the internet or simply think that it isn\u2019t important. In reality, monitoring our kids\u2019 time on the internet is an extremely important part of our jobs as parents &#8211; especially those of us with younger kids. <\/span><b>Installing an app that allows parents to keep an eye on what their kids are doing online <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be an easy way to prevent them from engaging in inappropriate activities on their devices. In order to achieve this, they may resort to spreading rumors or making fun of other kids. No matter what happens, staying calm and collected can go a long way to helping everyone involved reach a peaceful resolution. Not only did their actions cause harm to others, but cyberbullying can also have strict legal consequences that many students are not aware of. Many teens are shocked to learn that their actions can cause them to wind up in court, or worse.
